100% recycled plastic canvas

Our canvas is 100% recycled and made from post consumer plastic waste. The composition of the yarn that is used to make the canvas is at least 10% upcycled marine plastic (litter from the ocean) and the remaining 90% is post-consumer PET from land sources.

9 million tons of plastic enters the sea from the land, so we're able to prevent one of the root causes, whilst also helping to clear up what is being trawled up by fishermen.

The wholesaler of this fabric is based in Felgueiras, Portugal and the canvas is made in Alicante, Spain.

1 million plastic bottles are sold every single minute around the globe. Only 9% of all plastics ever made have been recycled.

Every year, 12 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans. 4.6 billion tons already exists in landfill and our environment.

80% of marine litter comes from the land. Roughly 90% of our mesh material is recycled here so it never reaches the ocean, whilst at least 10% is marine litter, so we're clearing up at the same time too.

lining from recycled corn

Our lining comes from the same manufacturer as our vegan suede. This lining is a very new product they've recently developed and it is comprised of 30% corn waste from the food and agriculture industry and 70% recycled PET (post consumer plastic). The lining has the same feel as a leather lining and is produced using a manufacturing system that does not create CO2. This material is also Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 class I certified.

vegan suede

Our vegan suede is made from microfibre with an Oeko-Tex® Standard 100 class I certification. This means that the fabric has passed the most stringent controls, and can be declared eco-friendly and free of agents harmful to health. This material is extremely tough and has a very high abrasion resistance. This is our only raw plastic based material and we only use this on our styles to properly reinforce areas such as the toe, heel and laces. It is 100% recyclable and is covered under our free takeback recycling scheme.

This material is manufactured in La Rioja, Spain. Our supplier is committed to its social and environmental responsibility as a manufacturer. They have a waste management programme that recycles around 500 tonnes of discarded or used fabric a year.

naturally dyed laces

Our laces are made from 100% cotton in Felgueiras, Portugal. They are dyed using natural colourants; for example, our beige laces are dyed with almond nut pigments.

bio-degradable insoles

Our insole is PETA approved vegan and made from a mixture of Corn and Kenaf plant fibres so it is 100% natural. The fibres are topped with our lining material. This is what the Kenaf Plant looks like.

recycled insole board

Made from 100% recycled cardboard! This can also be recycled.

recycled rubber soles

We work with 2 sole suppliers, both within a 30 minute drive of Porto. The skate sole for our Franco sneaker is made from 70% post industry waste rubber. This also includes mis-shapen soles the factory hasn't approved as well as off-cuts and scraps. Our soles can be shredded down at the end of its life as they are 100% recyclable.

The other supplier we work with is making our custom chunky sole for our signature Billie sneaker. This sole is 45% recycled and the manufacturing facility where the soles are made runs entirely off renewable energy, cutting carbon emissions. This supplier also uses a small percentage of their profits to help out several local charities. The chunky sole is also 100% recyclable.

vegan water based glues

All of the adhesives used are water based. Glue is such a small detail and can be overlooked - traditional glues in shoemaking commonly contain animal products, but we’ve made sure our glue is 100% vegan!

plastic free packaging

Our cardboard boxes are recycled and recyclable. We only use natural craft cardboard with plain printing for a matte black look. We don’t laminate our boxes, which is a common process used to make the boxes look shiny but involves the use of plastic film.

Our box supplier is based is Avintes, Portugal. The cardboard boxes can be recycled or they can be shredded, soaked in water and composted. They will break down fully within 3 to 4 months. We have designed the box to be aesthetic, durable and to work well for storage so that you can keep it and use it at home, which is why it features a drawer design as opposed to a standard lid.

We also use tissue paper to protect our shoes. This is also made in the Porto region of Portugal and can be recycled.

recycled outer packaging

Our storage and logistics warehouse is based near Guimarães, Portugal, which is conveniently located less than 30 minutes from our sneaker manufacturer, meaning our shoes don’t have to travel far once they are made, reducing their carbon footprint. Once our shoes have been delivered to our shipment facility and an order comes through, they are hand picked and posted to you! Our shoe boxes are placed in an outer protective cardboard box which is 100% recycled and recyclable. We also don't use plastic tape; we have our own strong Trash Planet paper tape and your delivery details are printed on a paper label.

Everything is plastic free.

here's how franco is 75% recycled

We gave each pair of shoes 10 points. We then divided the 10 points between each component, giving each component a share of the 10 points. For example, our sole makes up a large amount of each shoe, so we gave the sole 2.5 points out of 10.

We then worked out the percentage of each component that comes from recycled sources. Our soles are 70% recycled so we calculated that 70% of 2.5 points = 1.75 points.

At the end, we added up all the recycled points and got our total. Franco earned 7.55 points out of 10 on the recycled scale, which is equivalent to 75.5%.
